The Ise Cultural Foundation is pleased to announce
the first exhibition held by the Nika Association
in New York. It celebrates the 150th anniversary of
US-Japan relations by Japanese Ministry of Foreign
Affairs. The Nika Association is a prestigious art
organization that represents contemporary Japanese
artists abroad. The organization was originally founded
in 1914, and it has continued to support artists and
promote art through global exchange.
The exhibition is entitled Nika Association:
From Another Perspective. The concept and theme
is further elaborated upon by Mie Iwatsuki in Nika
Association: From Another Perspective in the
accompanying exhibition catalog. In her article, Iwatsuki
provides critical insight into the role of the art
organization in relation to Japanese society. She
also reviews the current state of contemporary Japanese
art world, relating it to issues that concern the
definition of independence and individuality as well
as the definition of values and identity. Iwatsuki
examines the formation of identity, marketability,
and the effect of such art organizations have had
on cultural production in Japan.
At this time, the Nika Association has approximately
one thousand members. Sixteen hundred artists have
participated its juried exhibitions. The association
holds an annual exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan
Art Museum that regularly draws sixty-thousand visitors.
In 1960, the organization had their first international
event at the Musee National dArt Moderne Paris
and has organized and facilitated exchange exhibitions
with artists from France, Mexico, Denmark, Bulgaria,
Portugal, Thailand and the Netherlands through the
cooperation of embassies, various museums, and other
intermediaries.
The artwork of Yoshio Tsuruoka, Hiroki Oda, Toshio
Yodoi, will be featured in this exhibition. The three
artists are currently board members of the Nika Association
and are also members of the Japan Art Academy, the
highest honor in the field of Fine Arts in the country.
In addition, works by one hundred fifty three other
academic members will be on view.
*About forty selected works will also be exhibited
at the Plaza Hotel in New York as a special event
on June 27-29. After the New York exhibition, the
show travels to Honolulu for a joint exhibition with
Hawaiian artists. There it remains open from October
17 to 22.
